May 22, 2012: Jeffery P. Reynolds, P.A. Establishes Precedent Towards Ending NORM Insanity in Oil and Gas States

On May 22nd, the Lincoln County Chancery Court affirmed on the merits the Mississippi State Oil and Gas Board's adoption of the landspreading amendment to Rule 68. Landspreading is an environmentally safe option for disposing of low amounts of NORM, far less costly than disposal at distant facilities.

“This was our third win at the Chancery Court appellate level and the first on the merits. It is a breakthrough in our thirteen year battle against plaintiffs NORM attorney Stuart Smith to bring some common sense to the NORM disposal issue,” said Reynolds.

“I believe this establishes an important precedent for instituting the same NORM disposal rule in other oil and gas states. The companies my firm has represented deserve much credit for leading this charge on behalf of the oil and gas industry all these years.”

Jeffery P. Reynolds, P. A. represented the following companies in this effort:

  • Murphy Oil USA, Inc.
  • Total E&P USA, Inc.
  • Anadarko Petroleum Corporation
  • ExxonMobil Corporation
  • BP Corporation
  • Marathon Oil Company
